First International Congress of PE teachers
The First International Congress of Physical and Health Educators took place in Petrozavodsk (Russia) on June 24-29, 2008. It was organized by the Government of the Republic of Karelia, Karelian Ministry of Eucation, Committee on Sport and Physical Culture of the Republic of Karelia, Karelian State Pedagogical University, and Association of Physical and Health Education Teachers of Finland. For the first time in Russia the Congress gathered Russian and European specialists in sport and physical education. Lectures and practical demonstrations were conducted by experts from Russia, Finland, Estonia, Canada, the USA, and Lithuania. The programme was divided into three sections of researchers, practical physical and health educators, and dissemination of the results of the project “Health promotion through PE lessons"
The Congress participants also had an opportunity to celebrate the 305th anniversary of the city of Petrozavodsk, visit the Kizhi Island, and take a rafting trip along the Shuya river. The First International Congress gathered more than 300 participants from 7 countries.
